HOUGHTON, Mich. – The sixth ranked Lewis University women's basketball team used a 17-3 run over the first six-plus minutes of the fourth quarter to defeat Michigan Tech 65-51 for its seventh straight win on Saturday afternoon in Houghton, Mich.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led three Flyers (7-1) in double figures with 23 points while
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) and
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) added 12 points each.
Lewis shot 47 percent from the field and 63 percent from beyond the arc in the opening half to take a 33-24 lead into the intermission. Lockett led the way with 10 points in the first 20 minutes while Kelliher dropped in eight and Green and
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) contributed five points apiece.
The Flyers opened the third quarter scoring the first four points of the quarter to extend its lead to 13 points less than 1:30 into the stanza. The Huskies (6-5) chipped away at the lead over the final six minutes of the third quarter and tied the game at 42 with a fastbreak layup from Ellie Mackay with less than a minute to play in the frame.
Kelliher gave Lewis the lead right back hitting a jumper on the next possession but Sloane Zenner answered on the other end with a layup to even things back up.
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) gave the Flyers the lead for good hitting a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Lewis scored the first four points of the final stanza to extend their lead to seven but Michigan Tech cut it to four on a three-pointer from Hannah Hobson. That would be the closest it got though as the Flyers answered with a 13-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 64-47 after a jumper from Kelliher.
Kelliher had six points in that run while Green added five more.
Lewis finished the contest shooting 44 percent (25-for-57) from the floor, was 7-of-16 from three and shot 73 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Huskies 40-to-31 and outscored them in the paint 30-to-20.
Michigan Tech ended the game shooting 36 percent (20-for-56) from the field, was 7-of-19 from three and hit 80 percent of its attempts at the charity stripe. Ellie Walsh led the Huskies with 15 points while Cassidy Trotter added 12. Abbie Botz had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Flyers play their final game of the first half of the season on Monday at Northern Michigan at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
