MUNCIE, Ind. – The eighth ranked Lewis University men's volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped in a 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 20-25) loss at Ball State on Friday evening in Muncie, Ind. The Flyers (8-4, 2-1 MIVA) struggled to get their offense going hitting .046 percent for the match.
Lewis trailed 18-17 in the opening set after a service ace from
Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) before the Cardinals (6-7, 1-2 MIVA) pulled away scoring five of the next six points to extend their lead to 23-18 after a Blake Reardon kill. The Flyers fought back scoring four of the next five points to trim the deficit to 24-22 but were unable to get any closer as Ball State held on for the win.
Lewis trailed by one early in set two when the Cardinals went on a 5-1 run to extend the lead to 11-6 after a Flyer error. They fought back to within 13-10 after a kill from
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) but Ball State responded scoring four of the next five points to take a 17-11 lead and force a Lewis timeout. The Flyers mounted another rally climbing back to within 18-16 on a kill from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) but that was the closest they got as the Cardinals ended the set on a 7-3 run to take the commanding 2-0 lead.
In the finale, Lewis got down big early and tried to climb out of the hole eventually getting to within 22-20 but Ball State withstood the rally scoring the final three points of the match to complete the sweep.
Mitchem and Coenen led the Flyers with nine kills each while
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 20 assists and
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) finished with 12 digs.
Reardon and Mitch Weiler led the Cardinals with 14 and 12 kills respectively. Jake Romano handed out 30 assists and added 14 digs in the contest. Ball State finished the match with a hitting percentage of .233.
Lewis concludes its two match road trip on Saturday taking on the Fort Wayne Mastodons at 6 p.m. (CST) in Fort Wayne, Ind.
