ROLLA, Mo. – The Lewis Flyers men's basketball team moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 64-44 win at Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon in Rolla, Mo. With the victory,
Scott Trost posted his 221
st win at Lewis surpassing Gordie Gillespie for the most in school history.
The Flyers (14-13, 9-8 GLVC) scored the first six points of the game but the Miners (2-22, 0-14 GLVC) answered back with a 12-3 run to take its lone lead of the game on a jumper by Allante Pickens with 12:09 to play in the opening half.
Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) answered with a three on the ensuing possession to even the score and sparked a 10-0 run to give Lewis the lead it wouldn't relinquish. S&T got to within four late in the half after a pair of free throws by Chris Harris but the Flyers went to the locker room with a six-point cushion when
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) tipped in a shot off the inbounds pass just before the buzzer.
Lewis shot 44 percent (15-for-34) from the field in the first half but struggled from three making only 6-of-18 attempts. The Flyers didn't attempt a free throw in the first 20 minutes.
The Miners were held to just 32 percent shooting (8-for-25) in the half but hung around making 11-of-14 attempts at the foul line.
S&T scored the first points of the second half on a jumper from Romain Louiserre but Lewis responded with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to build an 18-point lead and wouldn't allow the Miners to get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
The 44 points scored by S&T was a season low for them and the second fewest allowed by the Flyers this season.
Oliver led three players in double figures with 13 points while
Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) added 12 and
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) finished with 10. Lewis ended the game shooting 44 percent (25-for-57) from the field, went 10-for-27 from beyond the arc and was 4-of-8 at the foul line.
The Flyers defense held the Miners to just 27.5 percent shooting (14-for-51) and held them to only 14 points in the second half. Harris and Ervin Sarajlic led S&T with 10 points each.
Lewis concludes its regular season next Saturday hosting Southern Indiana in a 3 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers will honor their two seniors prior to the start of the game.
