Story Links

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team couldn't overcome five errors in its 5-2 loss to Grand Valley on Friday afternoon at The Dome at the Ballpark. Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) and Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had two hits apiece to lead the Flyers (0-4).

The Lakers (2-2) scored two batters into the game on a hit-by-pitch and a triple to right center off the bat of Kaylie Rhynard. Rhynard scored the second run of the inning when she stopped halfway between third and home. DeMasi tried to throw behind her at third but her throw sailed into left field allowing Rhynard to score.

GVSU added to its lead scoring three unearned runs in the top of the fourth. Teagan Shomin drove in Bailey Thatcher with a single to make it 3-0. Kelcie LaTour followed with a single to right to score Tanner Kiessel and then Shomin scored on a throwing error by Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew).

Lewis got a pair of runs back in the home half of the fourth. It loaded the bases with one out, Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) hit one to second and the Lakers tried to turn a 4-6-3 double play but the relay throw was wild allowing DeMasi and Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) to score.

The Flyers brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the half but Taylor hit into a 5-3 double play to end the threat.

Lewis was outhit in the contest 10-6. Taylor and Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) joined Guske and DeMasi in the hit column with a hit each. Shaw was the tough luck loser allowing five runs, one earned, on 10 hits in the complete game effort. She struck out two and walked two in the loss.

The Flyers return to the diamond on Saturday taking on Findlay at 9 a.m. and Wayne State at 1:30 p.m.
