ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Lewis Flyers upset 15
th ranked Wayne State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. The win was the second of the day for the Flyers (2-4) who earlier in the day knocked off Findlay 7-6.
Lewis scored the first run of the game in the top of the third. With two outs,
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) tripled down the right field line to score
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem).
The Warriors (0-4) tied the game in the fifth on a single from Brooke Turkalj. WSU had a chance to add more but
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) got a ground out and a strike out to keep the game tied.
Both sides had opportunities in the sixth but the Flyers left two on base while the Warriors left a runner stranded.
Lewis regained the lead in the seventh. With two outs,
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder and advanced all the way to second. Prieto came into score on an error by Rainey Psenicka with the go ahead run.
Shaw then came out in the home half of the seventh and retired the Warriors in order to improve to 1-2.
The Flyers finished with six hits in the contest led by
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) with two. DeMasi, Prieto,
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and Ciara Taylor had a hit each. Shaw went the distance allowing a run on nine hits with six punchouts and a walk.
Lewis is back in action on Sunday taking on Lindenwood at 9 a.m. at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill.
