ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer baseball team split its doubleheader against Grand Valley State on Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers (6-10) overcame a seven-run deficit to win the opener 11-10 then fell in the nightcap 7-4.
Game 1: Lewis 11, Grand Valley 10
The Flyers trailed 10-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth before scoring eight unanswered runs. Six of those runs came in the sixth and was highlighted by
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick)'s two-out, two-run triple that snuck under the glove of center fielder Nolan Anspaugh to tie the game. Cavalieri scored the go-ahead run a batter later on a wild pitch.
Grand Valley (11-8) put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh but
Brady Kostecki (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) struck out Zach Berry looking and got Jacob Gleason to ground out to second to end the game.
Lewis outhit the Lakers in the contest 15-13 with five players recording at least two hits. Cavalieri and
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) led the way with three hits each while Cavalieri drove in three runs.
Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney) picked up his first win of the season pitching a scoreless sixth. Kostecki worked a scoreless seventh for his fourth save of the season.
Game 2 – Grand Valley 7, Lewis 4
The Flyers took advantage of a Grand Valley error in the first inning to score the first run of the game.
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) reached on the error and came into score on a wild pitch. The Lakers tied the game in the second on a solo home run off the bat of Austin LaDoux.
Lewis retook the lead in its half of the second scoring a pair of runs on RBI doubles from Cavalieri and Tyrell. Grand Valley tied the game with two runs in the third on a wild pitch and an RBI single from LaDoux.
The Flyers regained the lead in the third on
Trayvon Johnson (Berkeley, Ill./St. Joseph's)'s double off the right field fence to score
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove). The Lakers took the lead scoring four unearned runs in the fourth. Ryan Blake-Jones had a two-run single and LaDoux followed with a two-run double to right center.
Lewis had six hits in the nightcap and was led by Branden Post with two.
Brad Littleton (Coal City, Ill./) took the loss allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits and three strikeouts.
The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Hammond, Ind., to take on Purdue Northwest at 3 p.m.
