HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lewis University baseball team fell to Purdue Northwest 4-1 Tuesday (March 20) in a nonconference game at Dowling Park.
PNU scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before Lewis got on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led off the inning with a double. After a walk and strikeout,
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) singled to load the bases.
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick)Â then singled to drive home Tittle before two outs ended the inning. The Pride added an insurance run in the seventh.
The Flyers (6-11) loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't drive across any runs. Post went 2-for-4 for the Flyers, while
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) added a double. Jordan Petty (1-0) picked up the win for PNU (7-4) in relief, going 2.2 scoreless innings.
George Manikas (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (0-1) suffered the loss. The bullpen, consisting of
Ryan Ward (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates),
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South),
Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence),
Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney) and
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) combined for three hits in five innings of work, allowing just one unearned run.
Lewis returns home Saturday (March 24) to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a four-game series against Indianapolis. The first game Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
