ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University baseball team split a double header with No. 10 Indianapolis Friday (March 23) at Brennan Field. The Flyers fell 4-1 in the opener, but rebounded to defeat the Greyhounds 7-0 in the second game. Lewis moves to 7-12 overall, 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Indianapolis is now 15-4 overall, 1-1 in GLVC.
Game 1 - Indianapolis 4, Lewis 1
Indianapolis picked up runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings to gain a 3-0 advantage. Lewis got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a single by
Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates), a walk from
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and a double by
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East), which scored Bloom. Tittle was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The Greyhounds picked up an additional run in the ninth.
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) and Schefske each had two hits in the contest. Jake Sprinkle (4-0) earned the win for Indianapolis, going nine innings, allowing five hits and one earned run.
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up three runs in seven innings, striking out four.
Game 2 - Lewis 7, Indianapolis 0
Blake Marks (Gardner, Ill./Gardner-South Wilmington) (3-1) earned the win for the Flyers, pitching the seven-inning shutout. He allowed five hits and one walk, while striking out 10 batters. Tyler Hosto (3-1) had the loss for the Greyhounds, going six innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, with five of those runs being earned. Rutherford went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the offense, including a home run.
The Flyers scored three times in the bottom of the first to build their lead. Rutherford opened with a single and after an error, Bloom singled, scoring Rutherford and
Trayvon Johnson (Berkeley, Ill./St. Joseph's) sacrificed the runners to second and third. A wild pitch scored
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) as Bloom advanced to third. Tittle then doubled home Bloom for the 3-0 lead.Â
Lewis picked up four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Tittle walked with one out.
Scott Garrow (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township)Â pinch ran for Tittle and advanced to third on a single by Schefske. After a second out
Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) singled, scoring Garrow. Rutherford then homered to right field, clearing the bases.
The two teams will meet again at 12 p.m. Sunday for another double header at Brennan Field.
