ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The seventh ranked Lewis Flyer men's volleyball team bounced back from its loss on Wednesday at Loyola with a sweep of Lincoln Memorial (25-16, 25-16, 25-10) on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (12-5) hit .421 in the match and held the Railsplitters (6-7) to .041 attack percentage.
Lewis used a 10-2 run early in the first set to break it open.
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) had two kills in the run while
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick),
Danny Maurer (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) and
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) had one kill apiece. LMU got as close as six points in the set but the Flyers scored five of the next seven points to stretch the lead back to eight and would go onto win 25-16.
Lewis forced the Railsplitters into nine attack errors and had seven total blocks in the frame. Walenga, Instenes and Maurer each had three kills in the set as the Flyers hit .385 percent.
The second set featured eight ties and three lead changes before Lewis began to pull away with an 11-1 run to erase an 11-9 deficit. Instenes had two kills and an ace in the run while Moses and
Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs) had a kill each. Lincoln Memorial wouldn't get closer than six the rest of the frame as the Flyers won 25-16 to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was tied at 6-6 when Lewis broke loose thanks to a 13-2 run. Instenes, Moses and
Nick Vander Zanden (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) combined for five kills in the set changing run. The Railsplitters cut the deficit to 22-10 after a kill from AJ Risavy but the Flyers scored the final three points of the match to complete the sweep.
Instenes and Moses led Lewis with 10 kills each while Walenga added seven and Vander Zanden finished with six. Van Loo had 30 assists in the match and Walenga had eight digs. Van Loo and Vander Zanden had four total blocks each.
Evan Cory led Lincoln Memorial with eight kills while Pedro Carvalho had seven. Risavy dished out 22 assists and Cory and Logan Kerley had five digs apiece.
The Flyers are back at home on Saturday evening to take on the King Tornado at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
