LAKELAND, Fla. - The Lewis University baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday (March 4) to open its Spring Break Trip. The Flyers fell to Minnesota-Duluth 8-4 in the first game and 7-1 to Ashland to fall to 1-5 on the season.
Game 1: Minnesota-Duluth 8, Lewis 4
The Flyers opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-out rally.
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) was hit by a pitch and
Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) singled, setting up
Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), who singled to score Post. The lead grew in the fourth inning when the Flyers had another two out rally.
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East)Â singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) then tripled to score Schefske and then scored himself on the play thanks to an error as the Flyers took a 3-0 lead.
That was the score heading into the bottom of the fifth when Minnesota-Duluth evened the game on a three-run home run. The Bulldogs (3-0) added five more runs in the seventh, thanks to another three-run homer. Post added a RBI singled in the ninth for the final score of the game.
Rutherford finished 2-for-5 with two runs and 2 RBI, while Schefske and Terry each went 2-for-4.
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South)Â went five innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and three earned runs, striking out six.
Dalton Hottle (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville)Â (0-1) suffered the loss, while Thomas Bruchu (1-0) earned the win for the Bulldogs.
Game 2: Ashland 7, Lewis 1
Lewis scored the first run of the game as Schefske homered in the bottom of the third to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. It was all Eagles (3-2) from there though as they scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the eighth.
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick), Terry and Tyrell added hits for the Flyers. Devin Peters (1-0) earned the win for Ashland, striking out 11 in seven innings.
Brad Littleton (Coal City, Ill./) suffered the loss for the Flyers, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Lewis is back in action at 10:30 a.m. Monday when they face Saint Anselm College.
