AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Behind eight hits from the first three batters in the Lewis lineup, the Flyers had an offensive explosion, scoring 10 runs in a 10-4 win over Saint Anselm Monday (March 5).
Lewis got three hits from leadoff hitter
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere), who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, four RBI and a home run. Second batter
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a double, while third batter
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
The Flyers (2-5) also got a big contribution from the bottom of the lineup as eighth hitter
Troy Hajdukovic (Palatine, Ill./Fremd)Â went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, while ninth batter
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East)Â went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double.
Blake Marks (Gardner, Ill./Gardner-South Wilmington) (1-1) picked up the win on the mound, allowing six hits and three earned runs over seven innings, striking out seven batters. Adam Krol (0-1) suffered the loss for Saint Anselm (4-5), allowing seven earned runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings.
Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Rutherford blasted a two-run home run after a Hajdukovic walk. The lead grew to 7-0 in the top half of the fifth inning. It started with a Hajdukovic double that was followed by a Schefske double, scoring Hajdukovic. Rutherford then singled, scoring Schefske. After a flyout, Tyrell singled in Rutherford.
Trayvon Johnson (Berkeley, Ill./St. Joseph's) followed with a single and
Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) walked, loading the bases. A balk advanced all of the runners, scoring Tyrell. Then Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick).
Saint Anselm got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth to make it a 7-4 game going into the ninth.
The Flyers put the game away with three runs in the ninth, on doubles by Schefske and Tyrell sandwiched singles from Rutherford and Post.
Lewis is back in action Tuesday (March 6) in Auburndale when it faces Minnesota State - Mankato at Noon.
