ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team won its third straight game and sixth in its last seven with a 9-1 win in six innings over Ferris State on Tuesday morning. The Flyers (7-6) had a season-high 16 hits against the Bulldogs (3-7) and were led by
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) and
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with four hits each.
Lewis dropped its second game on Tuesday to the College of Saint Rose 7-3.
Game 1 – Lewis 9 Ferris State 1 six innings
Lewis scored four runs on four hits and an error in the first inning. Guske led off with a single to short and advanced to second a sacrifice from
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport). DeMasi reached when the first baseman pulled her foot.
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) doubled to left bring home Guske with the first run of the game. Taylor followed with a double to center to drive in DeMasi and Prieto.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) followed with a single to right to put runners on the corner with no one out.
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) made it 4-0 with a ground out to second to score Taylor.
Ferris State got a lead-off home run from Sarah Meredith in the second inning to get on the board. The Bulldogs brought the tying run to the plate in each of the next two innings but
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) was able to keep them off the board.
The Flyers busted the game open in the sixth. With one out,
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) doubled to left and Guske singled to third. DeMasi cleared the bases with a three-run blast and then Prieto went back-to-back with DeMasi hitting a solo shot three pitches later. Taylor followed with a single to right and Sanders walked. Weber drove in her second run with a double to left.
Five players had at least two hits in the contest led by Guske and Taylor. DeMasi, Prieto and Sanders had two hits each. Sanders improved to 5-2 allowing a run on three hits with eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Game 2 – Saint Rose 7 Lewis 3
The Golden Knights (2-6) scored four runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run single of the bat of Sydney Cimini, a bases loaded walk to Briana Bowen and Alina Germinerio reached on an error allowing the fourth run to score.
Lewis got a run back in the home half of the first. Guske led off with a walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on Prieto's single to center.
Saint Rose added to its lead in the third on a solo home run from Cimini and an RBI single from Katie Shevlin.
The Flyers got a run back in the fourth when
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) reached on an error by the shortstop to score Taylor.
The Golden Knights made it 7-2 in the fifth on a RBI single from Germinerio that scored Erin Maloney.
Lewis made it 7-3 in its half of the fifth as Prieto drove in Guske for the second time with a groundout. The Flyers had opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings but hit into inning ending double plays each time.
Lewis was outhit in the contest 9-6 and was led by Prieto with two hits.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and three walks in the contest.
The Flyers are back on the diamond on Wednesday morning taking on St. Cloud State at 8 a.m. (CST) followed by a game against Wayne State (Neb.) at 10:30 a.m. (CST).
