HONOLULU – The eighth ranked Lewis Flyer men's volleyball team's bid for an upset came up short in a four set loss against fourth ranked BYU on Saturday at the Outrigger Invitational at the University of Hawaii.
The Cougars (16-4) used a 10-4 run early in the opening set to build a seven point lead by the midway point of the set. The Flyers (13-7) closed the deficit to 14-10 after an error by Christian Rupert. BYU responded by scoring six of the next nine points to regain its seven point lead and would go onto win 25-15.
The second stanza was tied at 6 when Lewis went on an 11-2 run to build its largest lead of the set at 17-8. The Cougars got as close as 22-16 but the Flyers were able to hold off the rally and win 25-18.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) recorded seven kills in the set and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington) added four.
The third frame went back and forth and was tied at seven but BYU gained some separation thanks to an 8-3 run. Lewis fought back getting to within on a couple of occasions but was unable to complete the comeback falling 25-23. Coenen and Murry combined for eight of the team's 12 kills in the set.
The fourth set was similar to the third one with the Cougars taking an early four point but the Flyers fought back to tie the set at 18 after a kill by
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North). BYU used a 5-2 run to break the tie and take a 23-20 lead and force Lewis to take its final timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Flyers scored three straight to tie it up at 23 but BYU got a kill from Brenden Sander to take a 24-23 lead.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) tied it back up with a kill but the Cougars scored the final two points of the match to win 26-24.
Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .245 (49 kills/22 errors/110 attacks). Coenen had a match-high 15 kills while Murray and Moses added nine kills apiece.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) distributed 43 assists and
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) had eight digs.
BYU ended the match with an attack percentage of .289 (45 kills/17 errors/97 attacks). Sander had 14 kills to lead the Cougars while Gabi Garci Fernande added 10 kills. Leo Durkin handed out 35 assists and Zach Hendrickson had eight digs.
The Flyers conclude play in the Outrigger Invitational on Saturday evening taking on 11
th ranked Penn State at 8 p.m. (CST).
