ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team snapped its six-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Rockhurst in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Hawks (20-27, 14-12 GLVC) won the second game 11-1 in five innings.
Game 1 – Lewis 3, Rockhurst 2
The Flyers (19-29, 8-18 GLVC) had their first three batters reach base safely and scored a pair of runs to begin the game.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) drove in
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) with a single to center and an error allowed Taylor and
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) to advance to second and third. With one out,
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) dropped a single into shallow left to bring home DeMasi.
Rockhurst tied the game in the top of the second on two-run home run to right center off the bat of Megan Freitag. The Hawks had their chances in the third, fourth and fifth innings but
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) was able to escape those innings unscathed.
Shannon Greene set down 10 straight Lewis hitters until Prieto reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with one out in the fifth. The error allowed her to advance to second and she scored three pitches later on DeMasi's double to left center.
Sanders retired Rockhurst in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to earn her 13th win of the season.
The Flyers finished the game with seven hits and were led by DeMasi and Weber with apiece. Prieto, Taylor and
Emily Espinosa (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had one hit each. Sanders struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing the two runs on six hits in the complete game effort.
Game 2 – Rockhurst 11, Lewis 1 Five Innings
The Hawks came out swinging in game two scoring two runs each in the second and third innings before breaking the game open with a seven-run fourth. They hit four home runs in that frame including going back-to-back-to-back.
Lewis got its run in its half of the fourth. DeMasi led off the inning with a double to left center, went to third on a groundout to second and scored on a dropped throw by the first baseman.
The Flyers were held to just two hits in the contest with DeMasi and
Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) recording one each. Sanders suffered the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Lewis concludes its season on Sunday hosting Drury in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field.
