ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to 11th ranked Indianapolis on Monday afternoon at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. The Flyers (16-20, 5-13 GLVC) dropped the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 2-0.
Game 1 -- Indianapolis 4, Lewis 1
The Greyhounds (28-8, 12-4 GLVC) took advantage of two walks in the second inning scoring three times on two hits. Cathy Skaggs hit a two-run triple to right to open the scoring then Julia Liceaga dropped a single in front of
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) to score Skaggs.
Lewis got a run back in the home half of the third on three infield singles.
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) started the rally with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice from
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego). Guske reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corner with one out.
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) drove in the first run with a single that was deflected by the pitcher. The Flyers missed a chance for more though leaving the tying runs on base.
Lewis put the tying runs on base in each of the fourth and sixth innings but was unable to get the key hit.
UIndy added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run to left off the bat of Jessie Noone. The 'Hounds had runners at second and third but
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) got a pop up to keep the deficit at three runs.
The Flyers had nine hits in the contest led by Brennan,
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) with two apiece. Shaw went the distance in game one allowing four runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two.
Game 2 – Indianapolis 2, Lewis 0
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) held Indianapolis scoreless through three innings but the Greyhounds broke through scoring twice in the fourth. Shannon Schuetz started the rally with a ground rule double to right center. Halie Foster followed with a double just inside the right field line to score Schuetz. Skaggs followed with a single to right to score Foster.
Foster kept the Flyer bats in check in the nightcap holding them to an infield single in the first inning and a two-out double in the seventh. She retired 18 batters in a row during one stretch until Shaw's double in the seventh.
Prieto and Shaw had the lone hits for Lewis. Boelte was the tough luck loser allowing two runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
The Flyers conclude their homestand on Saturday taking on Illinois Springfield in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field.
