Lewis Baseball Drops Two Games At No. 4 Illinois-Springfield

Johnson drives home three runs on the day

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Lewis University baseball team dropped a pair of games against No. 4 Illinois-Springfield, 6-5 in 10 innings and 5-2 Friday (May 4) at UIS Baseball Field. The Flyers fall to 19-25-1 on the year overall, 8-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Illinois-Springfield moves to 43-5, 21-1 in GLVC. The two teams will play two more games Saturday (May 5), beginning at 12 p.m.

Game 1 – UIS 6, Lewis 5 (10 innings)
The Flyers opened the scoring as Trayvon Johnson (Berkeley, Ill./St. Joseph's) doubled home a run in the first inning and Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) followed with a RBI single that scored Johnson. A Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) single helped make it a 3-0 Lewis lead in the fifth when a fielding error scored a run. The Prairie Stars evened the score with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th inning Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) singled to center field to score Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere), giving the Flyers the lead back. Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) singled to extend the lead to two, scoring Tittle. In the bottom half of the 10th though Michael Rothmund hit a three-run home run with two outs to win the game for UIS.

Post went 3-for-4, while Tyrell, Johnson and Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) all had two hits. Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) went 7.1 innings on the mound, allowing five hits and three earned runs, striking out eight. Cam Zunkel (2-1) picked up the win, while Brady Kostecki (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (1-5) had the loss.

Game 2 – UIS 5, Lewis 2
Johnson again got the scoring started in the first inning, this time on a fielder's choice, scoring Tyrell. UIS answered in the first to tie the game at 1-1. Johnson added another RBI in the third inning on a triple, again scoring Tyrell to give Lewis a 2-1 lead. The Prairie Stars came back with two runs in the third and added two more in the sixth to win the game.

Tyrell went 2-for-4 for the Flyers. Charlie Wright (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) (1-1) went 5-2 innings on the mound, allowing four hits and five runs. Andrew Dean moved to 10-0 for the Prairie Stars.
