Hammond, Ind. - The Lewis University men's soccer team opened its season Tuesday (Aug. 30) with a 2-1 loss at Purdue Northwest in a nonconference match at Dowling Park.
All three goals were tallied in a five minute, six second span in the second half after a scoreless first half. The Pride (1-0) opened the scoring at the 52:44 mark on a Jamie Garcia goal, assisted by Justin Barragan on a shot right outside the box.
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) quickly answered for the Flyers (0-1) with a goal from 20 feet out, assisted by
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling), at the 55:15 mark. However, Purdue Northwest responded less than three minutes later with what would be the game winner when Barragan knocked in a header from 10 yards out, with an assist to Isaiah Nieves.
Lewis had a pair of chances in the final 10 minutes as a corner kick led to a shot that went wide and then with 1:09 remaining
Conor Mohr-Condron (Hamburg, Germany/Oberstufe Foorthkamp)Â had a shot on goal that was saved by Raul Garrido-Garcia.
The Pride outshot the Flyers 13-10 for the game with a 9-4 advantage in the second half, with both teams recording four shots on goal.
The Flyers are back in action Sunday (Sept. 2) for their home opener against Upper Iowa. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
