ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer team dominated the stat sheet against Upper Iowa on Sunday but couldn't find the back of the net and settled for a 0-0 draw at Lewis Stadium.
The Flyers (0-1-1) had the first great chance when
Alexis Robles-Ibarra (Harvard, Ill./Harvard) got behind the Peacock (0-1-1) defense and was taken down just outside the box by Bradley Kaufer preventing a goal. Kaufer was given a red card and was sent off in the 16th minute. Upper Iowa had to play a man down the rest of the game.
On the ensuing free kick
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) sent it just over the bar. Lewis had another chance in the 17th minute on another free kick but
Devon Amoo-Mensah's (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) shot went wide left.
Timm Adler (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) had a chance in the 20th minute but he was denied by Nikolai Gogol.
Edgar Garcia (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) had a chance on a corner kick in the 23rd minute but missed it wide as well.
Amoo-Mensah had another chance in the 32nd minute trying to head in a corner kick from
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) but was denied by Gogol. Adler had another chance in the 37th minute but missed high. Robles-Ibarra had a shot attempt blocked in the 41st minute and then
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) was denied by Gogol in the 43rd minute.
The Flyers had eight shots in the first 45 minutes with three on goal and also had three corner kicks.
Lewis had several good scoring chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half but were unable to covert on them.
The Flyer defense didn't allow a shot until the 68th minute. Italo Martins Soares got behind the defense but
Edgar Avila (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) came off his line and was able to slow down the shot to prevent it from going into goal.
Malinowski nearly scored the game-winner in the 76th minute but his free kick didn't dip enough and sailed just over the top of the bar.
Upper Iowa had the best chance in the first overtime period when Joaquin Alonso blasted a shot off the crossbar in the 97th minute.
Lewis had a couple of chances in the second overtime but Amoo-Mensah had a shot blocked and
Mauricio Lasso (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) missed a shot high with more than a minute a remaining.
The Flyers outshot the Peacocks 18-2 for the contest, 6-1 in shots on goal and had 11 corner kicks to none for Upper Iowa.
Lewis begins a five match road trip on Friday traveling to Davenport, Mich., to take on Saginaw Valley State at 4 p.m. (CDT).
