ROMEOVILLE, Ill. –The Lewis women's soccer team opened its 2018 season with a 1-1 draw against Ashland on Thursday evening at Lewis Stadium.
The Flyers (0-0-1) had the game's first really good chance in the 13
th minute when
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) banged a shot off the crossbar. The Eagles (0-0-1) had a couple of chances in the next few minutes but were unable to put anything on frame.
Lewis took advantage of an Ashland miscue in the 37
th minute to broke the scoreless deadlock.
Sidney Riemer (Grafton, OH/Midview) chipped a ball over the Eagle defense and Parnello was able to beat the keeper to it and shot it into the open net.
The Eagles had a couple of chances late in the half but were unable to score.
Ashland finished the first 45 minutes with a 6-3 edge in shots but the Flyers had the lone shot on goal.
The Eagles tied the game in the 57
th minute on a penalty kick from Deijah Swihart. Ashland took advantage of a Flyer miscue for a corner kick. Mary Grace Haney served the corner kick into the middle of the box and Emily Mark's shot was blocked but was ruled a hand ball allowing Swihart to convert from the spot.
Parnello had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds but her shot was saved by Hannah Lee.
Neither side was able to generate much offense in the first overtime period but in the second one the Eagles dominated outshooting Lewis 5-0 with three of those being on goal. Ashland nearly had the game winner in the 106
th minute but Rylie Howman's shot was saved off the line by a Lewis defender to preserve the tie.
The Eagles had a couple of more chances but
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made two saves in the final three minutes to keep the game tied.
Ashland finished with a 15-8 edge in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal while each side two corner kicks.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday hosting Cedarville at 1 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
