ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The fifth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to four with a sweep of Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday night at Neil Carey Arena.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led a balanced offensive attack with 12 kills.
The Flyers (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) got off to a slow start in the opening hitting only .146 and committed seven attack errors but it was their defense that picked them up. The Lewis defense held the Tritons (6-5, 2-1 GLVC) to a .083 attack percentage, had three blocks and 18 digs.
The Flyers led 17-16 when they began to pull away thanks to a 7-2 run. Preuss,
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each had kills in that run. UMSL cut the deficit to 24-21 with three straight points but Lewis closed it out on an error by Selena Nolte.
The second set featured six ties and two lead changes. The Flyers held a one-point lead midway through the set before pulling away with a 9-3 run to build their largest lead of the set at 23-16 after an ace from
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls). The Tritons staved off a set point before
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) ended it with a kill to give Lewis the 25-18 win.
The final set was even at nine when the Flyers pulled away thanks to an 8-1 run. Preuss and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) each had three kills in that deciding run. The lead grew to 22-12 after an error by Cara Ferchen. UMSL scored three straight points to cut the Lewis advantage to 22-15 but the Flyers were able to close it scoring the final three points of the match.
The Flyers hit .400 in the third set recording 18 kills against only four errors. Preuss had seven of her kills in that third set while Venema added six kills off the bench.
Lewis finished the match hitting .286 (46 kills/14 errors/112 total attacks). Wilhelm and Hyland added nine and eight kills respectively. Becker handed out 33 assists while Hyland and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 11 digs each.
The Tritons were held to .088 hitting percentage for the match (28 kills/19 errors/102 attacks). Charlotte Richards led UMSL with eight kills while Nolte and Kylie Rudsinski had four kills each. Payton Kennelly finished with 12 assist and Megan Woll had a match-high 17 digs.
The Flyers continue their five match home stand on Friday night hosting Bellarmine at 5 p.m. Friday night's match will be Youth Volleyball Club Night at Neil Carey Arena.
