ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer team let a two goal halftime lead slip away and settled for a 2-2 draw at Truman State at Bulldog Soccer Park on Friday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo.
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) and
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) led the Flyers (1-1-3, 0-0-1 GLVC) with two shots apiece.
Lewis jumped on top in the 22nd minute on Malinowski's first goal of the season off an assist from
Conor Mohr-Condron (Hamburg, Germany/Oberstufe Foorthkamp). Malinowski received the pass from Mohr-Condron then dribbled down the middle of the field and scored from 15 yards out.
The Flyers added to their lead 20 minutes on Ochoa's second goal in as many as games. Ochoa received a pass from
Sebastian Arguello (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) and scored from 15 yards out.
Lewis was outshot 6-5 in the first 45 minutes but held a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.
Truman State (2-0-2, 0-0-1 GLVC) broke
Edgar Avila's (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) scoreless streak at 363 minutes when Mateo Montano headed home a corner kick from Austin Morgan in the 53rd minute. The Bulldogs scored the equalizer 3:31 later when Ian McCluskey scored off a free kick from Zach Vahlkamp from 40 yards away.
The Flyers had three chances in a 10-minute stretch to reclaim the lead.
Ellis Williamson (Kimberley, Nottingham, United Kingdom) had his shot saved by Jacob Gunn in the 62nd minute, Arguello missed wide right less than two minutes later and
Alexis Robles-Ibarra (Harvard, Ill./Harvard) had his shot blocked in the 69th minute.
Truman had a couple of chances in the final 12 minutes of regulation. Avila saved a shot from Jeff Masters in the 78th minute and then McCluskey missed a chance wide right in the 85th minute.
The Bulldogs controlled the first overtime period outshooting Lewis 4-0. Trevor Kaufmann had a shot blocked in the 92nd minute, Avila made a save on a shot from Jake Koenig two minutes later, Kaufmann missed wide left in the 98th minute and Tristyn Hammer had a shot attempt blocked near the end of the period.
Truman recorded the only shot in the second overtime when Jeff Masters tried to head one past Avila but Avila made the save.
The Flyers were outshot 17-9 in the contest but only 6-4 in shots on goal. Avila came up with three saves in the contest.
Lewis continues its five match road trip on Sunday afternoon taking on McKendree in Lebanon, Ill., at 2:30 p.m.
