LEBANON, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat against McKendree on Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. The Flyers (1-2-3, 0-1-1 GLVC) were unable to rally from an early deficit.
The Bearcats (4-1, 2-0 GLVC) struck first with a goal in the sixth minute. Gonzalo Correa scored off an assist from Jett Gay. McKendree added to its lead in the 29th minute when Blake Williams found the back of the net off an assist from Eddie Davis.
Lewis had a pair of chances to get on the board late in the first half.
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) had the first chance in the 38th minute but sent his shot over the crossbar.
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.), looking for his third goal in three games, had his chance saved by Alvaro Cortazar in the 40th minute.
The Bearcats had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half and had three shots on goal compared to one for the Flyers.
McKendree added to its lead eight minutes into the second half when Luke Schlichting scored off a pass from James Stone.
Lewis played the final 20-plus minutes a man down after
Michael Zajac (Hickory Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) was sent off with a red card in the 68th minute.
The Bearcats outshot the Flyers 9-2 in the contest and 6-1 in shots on goal.
Lewis concludes its five game road trip on Friday (Sept. 21) at Quincy at 7:30 p.m.
