ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women's soccer team won its second straight game upsetting 20th ranked Truman State 2-1 in the GLVC opener for both teams on Friday at Truman Soccer Park in Kirksville, Mo. It's the first win over ranked team for the Flyers (2-1-2, 1-0-0 GLVC) since they defeated 10th ranked Truman State 2-0 on Oct. 16, 2016.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 0-1 GLVC) entered the game allowing just one goal in their first four contests but it was Lewis who struck first. Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) scored her team leading fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute with an assist from Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian). Richardson crossed the ball to Parnello who knocked it in from 30 yards out.

Truman had a couple of chances for the equalizer in the seventh and 11th minutes but both shots were off target. The 'Dogs evened the score in the 29th minute on Laura Ney's unassisted goal. Ney scored off a free kick from 40 yards out.

Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) put Lewis back in front in the 39th minute scoring off a free kick from Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian). Truman was whistled for a foul 40 yards from goal and Richardson served the free kick into the box and Gustafson got to it and put it in the net for her first collegiate goal.

The Flyers finished with a 6-4 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes and had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Lewis applied the pressure early in the second half looking to extend its lead but was unable to get anything past Beth Hopwood.

The Flyer defense had to weather the Bulldog storm in the final 15 minutes as they were hunting for the equalizer. Truman took five shots in that stretch but only put one on goal. Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) made a save in the 78th minute to preserve the lead. The Bulldogs' Paige Peterson hit the post in the 80th minute and later hit the crossbar with less than three minutes to play.

Lewis finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots and 6-1 in shots on goal. Truman had 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Flyers are back in action on Sunday afternoon traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 12 p.m.
