LEBANON, Ill. – The Lewis women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against McKendree on Sunday afternoon at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill. The loss snapped the Flyers (2-2-2, 1-1 GLVC) two game winning streak.
Lewis had the game's first scoring chance in the 11th minute when
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) sent a shot over the crossbar. The Bearcats (4-0, 2-0 GLVC) had a pair of opportunities in the 14th minute.
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) stopped a shot by Jane Skaggs and then 0:30 later Emma Dering sent over the bar.
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) tried to put the Flyers on the board in the 18th minute but was denied by Zoe Brochu. McKendree responded 0:30 later on a goal from Madyson Mossman.
Lewis had three chances in the final 10 minutes of the first half.
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) missed a shot high in the 35th minute then
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had her shot saved by Brochu in the 40th minute and
Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) missed a shot wide in the 44th minute.
The Flyers held a 6-3 advantage in shots while each team put two shots on goal.
Lewis had a pair of chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half but Havelka-Vanderplow and Clark each missed with shots high. McKendree nearly put the game away in the 78th minute but Clark came up with a save to keep it a one-goal deficit.
The Flyers had two more chances in the final three minutes of the contest. Havelka-Vanderplow missed with a shot high in the 88th minute and then Parnello missed a shot wide with 1:05 left.
Lewis held a 10-6 advantage in shots but only put two on goal while the Bearcats had three shots on goal. Havelka-Vanderplow and Parnello led the way with three shots apiece.
The Flyers conclude their three match road trip next Friday (Sept. 21) at Quincy at 5 p.m.
