Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Illinois Springfield Sunday (Sept. 23) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lewis Stadium. The Prairie Stars scored goals in the first 10 minutes of each half in the contest.
UIS (4-2-2 overall, 3-0-1 GLVC) opened the scoring at the 8:16 mark when Rhys Wallace scored on a header from three yards out on a cross from Mario Gonzalez. The goal came less than a minute after Lewis had a shot on goal from
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove), which was saved by Pijus Petkevicius.
After the Prairie Star goal, Lewis (1-4-3, 0-3-1) went on the attack, having the next three shots and three corner kicks, but could not register a shot on goal. Lewis outshot UIS 6-4 in the half and both teams had four corner kicks.
The Prairie Stars scored just 3:34 into the second half when Josh Moore found Mario Falsone on a pass ahead and Falsone scored from seven yards out for the 2-0 lead.
Lewis went on a big push starting at the 76 minute mark with a corner kick by
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic).Over the next six minutes the Flyers had four shots, two of which were on goal and one was blocked.
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) tallied two of the shots, with one of those being on goal, while Dorian Arguello also had a shot on goal in the stretch.Â
The Flyers held a 5-4 shot advantage in the second half and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks after halftime.
Lewis is back at home Friday (Sept. 28) when it takes on Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
