ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis men's soccer teams upset bid of 12th ranked Indianapolis came up short as the Flyers fell to the Greyhounds 2-1 in overtime on Friday night at Lewis Stadium.
Lewis (1-5-3, 0-4-1 GLVC) had the first great scoring chance less than four minutes into the game.
Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) got behind the UIndy (7-1-1, 3-1-1 GLVC) defense and his shot was headed for goal but Miles Palmer was able to get a hand on it to deflect it wide.
The Greyhounds broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute on Benjamin Sierra's fourth goal of the season. Brett Langley sent a pass ahead to Javier Steinwascher and then Steinwascher crossed it to Sierra who bent his shot into the upper right corner.
The Flyers had a chance less than a minute later but
Alexis Robles-Ibarra's (Harvard, Ill./Harvard) shot was blocked. UIndy had a chance to extend its lead in the 35th minute but Ben Rohder's header attempt was saved by
Edgar Avila (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Lewis had another chance right before the half but
Timm Adler's (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) shot went wide.
The Greyhounds held a 6-3 advantage in shots and 2-1 in shots on goal in the first half.
The Flyers got the equalizer less than 20 minutes into the second half. Adler crossed a ball into
Kristian Havran (Franklin Park, Ill./East Leyden) who headed it into the upper right corner for his first goal of the season.
Lewis had a pair of chances in the 71st minute as
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) and
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) each had shots blocked.
Marty Biskis (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) had a chance in the 80th minute but his shot went wide. Biskis had another shot in the 89th minute but it was blocked.
Both sides had their chances in the extra session. Alejandro Steinwascher had a chance in the 92nd minute that was saved by Avila. Adler had a chance for the game-winner in the 95th minute but his shot was saved by Palmer.
UIndy appeared to score the game-winner in the 96th minute but Steinwascher's shot hit the post and the rebound was cleared off the line. The 'Hounds scored the game winner 0:15 later when Steinwascher headed home a cross from Javier Steinwascher for his fourth goal of the season.
The Flyers were outshot in the contest 17-14 and 6-4 in shots on goal. Lewis had a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday when they travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis at 2:30 p.m. from Don Dallas Field.
