ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Devon Amoo-Mensah's (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) goal with 7:05 left in regulation lifted the Lewis men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. Amoo-Mensah scored a goal in each half for the Flyers (2-5-3, 1-4-1 GLVC).
The win snapped Lewis' four game losing streak and its five game winless streak.
The Tritons (4-5, 3-3 GLVC) dominated the first half on the stat sheet outshooting the Flyers 8-4 but it was Lewis who scored first. Amoo-Mensah headed home a cross from
Edgar Garcia (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) in the 40th minute for his second goal of the season.
Edgar Avila (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) made three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
UMSL evened the score early in the second half. The Flyers were whistled for a foul in the box and Magnus Anderson converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.
Lewis had a chance to regain the lead a couple of minutes later but
Timm Adler's (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) shot missed wide. The Flyers had another chance to retake the lead with 20 minutes to play but
Dorian Moreno (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) missed his attempt wide as well.
The Tritons had a chance in the 73rd minute but the Lewis defense was able to block the shot and then in the 79th minute Kenan Selimovic missed his shot wide.
The Flyers had another opportunity in the 83rd minute but Garcia missed his shot wide. The game-winning goal game just 0:42 after Garcia's attempt. Lewis won a corner kick and
John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) found Amoo-Mensah in the box and he headed it home for his team leading third goal of the season.
The Flyer defense held firm the rest of the way not allowing UMSL to get a shot away to preserve the victory.
The Tritons outshot Lewis 13-9 and 4-2 in shots on goal. The Flyers held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Amoo-Mensah and
Sebastian Arguello (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) each had two shots to lead Lewis.
The Flyers are back on the road on Friday as they travel to Louisville, Ky., to take on Bellarmine at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
