ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Cali Havelka-Vanderplow's (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) goal in the 64th minute lifted the Lewis women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Illinois Springfield at Lewis Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped the Flyers (3-3-2, 2-2 GLVC) two game losing skid and moved them back to .500.
 
The Prairie Stars (1-5-2, 1-3 GLVC) had a pair of scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes. Maggie Juhlin had a shot blocked in the ninth minute and then less than a minute later Taylor Mraz shot one over the bar.
 
Lewis had its first scoring chance in the 18th minute when Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) sent her shot high. Karly Soy (Eldridge, IA/North Scott Senior) had an opportunity in the 26th minute when she tried to head home a corner kick but the shot went wide. Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) had a chance right before the half but Paloma Guijarro made the save.
 
The Flyers had a 4-2 advantage in shots and had the lone shot on goal. UIS held the advantage in corner kicks 4-3.
 
Lewis applied the pressure in the first five minutes of the second half and nearly had a goal in the 51st minute but Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) had her shot deflected over the bar for a corner kick. Levins had another chance more than a minute later but her header shot was stopped by Guijarro.
 
Parnello had another chance in the 59th minute but her attempt was deflected out for a corner kick.
 
The Flyers broke through in the 64th minute. Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) received a long pass then dribbled towards the middle and found Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North). Gustafson crossed it to Havelka-Vanderplow. She tried to beat her defender to the left then reversed and brought it back to the right to get space. She shot the ball from the left side of the penalty box and shot it into the upper right corner for her first goal of the season.
 
Lewis had another chance with less than 15 minutes left when Gustafson was robbed by Guijarro who made a leaping save to knock it over the bar. Richardson had a chance to extend the lead in the 80th minute but her shot hit the cross bar.
 
Illinois Springfield had a golden opportunity to tie the game with less than nine minutes to play after a foul near the top of the box. Allison Hackett's attempt from 25 yards out on the free kick sailed high.
 
The Prairie Stars had another chance in the closing minutes but Erin Bolskar's header attempt missed wide.
 
The Flyers finished the game outshooting UIS by a 13-6 margin including 4-2 in shots on goal and also had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made two saves in goal to pick up the win.

Lewis is back at home on Friday when it hosts Indianapolis in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Lewis Stadium.
