ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women's soccer team won its second straight game defeating Indianapolis 2-1 on Friday night at Lewis Stadium.
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) and
Karly Soy (Eldridge, IA/North Scott Senior) tallied the goals for the Flyers (4-3-2, 3-2 GLVC).
Lewis struck first in the 16th minute.
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) won a ball near midfield and crossed the ball to Havelka-Vanderplow. She faked one way and then brought the ball back the other way and bent her shot into the upper right corner for her second goal of the season. It was her second straight game scoring a goal.
The Flyers had another chance 10 minutes later but
Jamie Hansen's (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) header attempt was saved by Laura Shake.
The Greyhounds (6-3-2, 3-1-1 GLVC) tied the game in the 33rd minute. Emily Del Campo's shot was saved by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) but she couldn't control the rebound and it bounced to Sierra Singer who shot it past Clark to even the contest.
Lewis had a couple of chances late in the half but one was blocked and another was high.
The Flyers held a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Lewis appeared to score the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute but it was waved off as the referee ruled that
Mallory Richardson's (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) corner kick went out of bounds and then came back in.
UIndy had a chance to take the lead five minutes later but Clark made a save on Michele Govern's shot attempt.
The Flyers took the lead in the 60th minute when Soy headed home Richardson's corner kick for her first of the season.
Parnello nearly made it 3-1 three minutes later but her shot was saved by Shake. Havelka-Vanderplow had another chance in the 65th minute that hit the crossbar.
The Greyhounds had a chance to tie the score in the closing minutes but Del Campo's shot was turned away by Clark.
Lewis finished the game with an 11-5 edge in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks.
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday when they travel to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Missouri-St. Louis at 12 p.m. from Don Dallas Field.
