ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lewis women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win at Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon for its third straight win.
The Flyers (5-3-2, 4-2 GLVC) took the lead in the 17th minute on their only chance of the half.
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) sent a corner kick and found
Karly Soy (Eldridge, IA/North Scott Senior) on the back post. Soy headed the ball off the shoulder of a defender and it crossed the goal line for her second goal in as many games and of the season.
The Tritons (2-7, 1-5 GLVC) had a couple of chances later in the half. Mia Milazzo headed a shot off the crossbar in the 34th minute and then two minutes later Sydney Bloch missed a shot wide. UMSL had another chance in the closing minutes of the half on a shot by Allysiah Belt that was saved by
Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North).
The Tritons held a 7-1 advantage in shots and 2-1 in shots on goal. Each team registered a corner kick in the half while UMSL was whistled for the only offsides.
Lewis had a couple of chances early in the second half to extend its lead.
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) missed a shot wide in the 48th minute and then 1:30 Parnello had her shot saved by Amber Haynes. Parnello gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute. She ran down a long pass from
Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), fought off a defender, then split two defenders and fired a shot from just outside box that beat Haynes inside the left post.
UMSL scored 0:20 later to cut the Lewis lead in half. Lee Strande scored off a pass from Sarah Lyon. Strande scored on a shot from inside the box for her second of the season.
The Tritons kept the pressure on in the final 20 minutes looking for the equalizer. They took nine shots but Riscossa made a couple of big saves in the 84th and 85th minutes denying a pair of header attempts.
Parnello led Lewis with three shots, two on goal, and Riscossa made four saves.
UMSL finished the game with a 19-4 advantage in shots but it was only 5-3 in shots on goal. The Tritons held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Flyers are back in action on Friday traveling to Louisville to take on Bellarmine at 2:55 p.m. (CT).
