INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In a match of runs it was the Indianapolis Greyhounds who had the last one ending the match on an 11-1 run to hand the 11th ranked Lewis women's volleyball team a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.
The Flyers (12-4, 6-2 GLVC) led wire-to-wire, by as many as six points, in the opening set. The Greyhounds (11-5, 6-2 GLVC) climbed back into the set thanks to a 12-7 run to cut the Lewis lead to 20-19 after service ace from Alyssa Spears. That was the closest they got though as the Flyers closed out the frame scoring five of the final seven points to win 25-21.
Lewis led by as many as five points midway through set two but UIndy once again battled back tying the set at 21 after an error by
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central). The Flyers appeared to regain control scoring three of the next four points to get to set point at 24-22 after a kill from
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic). Lewis had two chances to close it out but was unable to giving up the final four points of the set to fall 26-24.
The 'Hounds carried that momentum from the end of set two into set three building a six-point advantage midway through the set. The Flyers responded with an 8-2 run to even things at 18 after a kill from
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central). It was still tied at 20 when UIndy scored three straight points to seize control of the stanza. Lewis cut the deficit to two points twice but the Greyhounds would go onto win 25-22 after an error by Hyland.
The Flyers led 13-12 in set four when they pulled away thanks to a 9-2 run. Hyland had three kills and a service ace in that run while Wilhelm also added a kill and Sobieralski and
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) teamed up for a block. UIndy wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the set as Sobieralski finished it off with a kill.
Lewis rode that momentum into the final set as it scored the first six points of the set and led by as many as seven points at 11-4 after a kill from Sobieralski. The Greyhounds refused to go away scoring five straight points to cut the lead to 11-9. The Flyers slowed the run with a kill from Foster but couldn't stop it as UIndy scored the final six points of the match to win 15-12.
Lewis outhit the Greyhounds .183-to-.147 and had more kills 67-to-54 but committed four more attack errors and two more service errors in the contest. Each team finished with eight blocks in the match.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led the Flyers with 15 kills while Hyland, Wilhelm and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had nine kills each. Sobieralski had 24 assists off the bench and
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) finished with 39 digs.
Taylor Jacquay led three 'Hounds in double figures with 15 kills while Emily Ellis and Katie Furlong had 10 kills each. Spears finished with 37 assists and Olivia Martin had 38 digs.
Lewis is back at home on Tuesday night hosting Wisconsin-Parkside in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
