Romeoville, Ill. - Kailey Parnello's (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) penalty kick goal in the 19th minute provided all the scoring the Lewis University women's soccer team would need in a 1-0 win over Northern Michigan Saturday (Sept. 8) in a nonconference match at Lewis Stadium.
Parnello's team-leading third goal of the season came at the 18:50 mark in the first half after a foul in the box. The whole series began with a corner kick by
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) and a shot on goal by
Karly Soy (Eldridge, IA/North Scott Senior). After a punt by the NMU goalie,
Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) took the 50/50 ball and passed to
Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), who found Parnello in the box. Parnello was able to draw the foul and finish the penalty kick.
The Flyers continued the advantage of play throughout the second half, managing four corner kicks in the second stanza, without allowing any to the Wildcats. For the game the Flyers held a 16-8 shot advantage, with a 7-2 shots on goal advantage. Parnello had a team-high four shots on goal.
Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) (2 saves) combined with
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) for the shutout in goal.
Lewis moves to 1-1-2 on the year with the win, while Northern Michigan falls to 1-2-1.
The Flyers open their Great Lakes Valley Conference season Friday (Sept. 14) when they travel to Kirksville, Mo. to take on Truman State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
