ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer men's basketball team defeated Missouri S&T 73-58 to improve to 10-2 on the season and 3-1 in GLVC play on Thursday evening at Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo.
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) finished with a game-high 16 points to lead three Flyers in double figures in the contest.
The two sides traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the contest before Lewis began to take control with 10 straight points to extend its lead to 23-12 with less than nine minutes to play in the half.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) and
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) each had three points in the run while
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) and Maro Pettinato added two points apiece.
The Miners (2-10) began to chip away at the lead eventually getting to within 31-28 on a jumper in the paint from Romain Louiserre but the Flyers closed the half scoring the final eight points to take an 11 point lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Lewis shot 49 percent (16-for-33) from the field in the frame but was just 1-of-6 from but did shot 86 percent at the foul line. McCullum led all scorers with eight points.
S&T shot 44 percent (10-of-23) from the floor but missed eight of nine attempts from downtown. It outrebounded the Flyers 17-to-11 in the first 20 minutes but Lewis forced 13 turnovers which resulted in 20 points.
Lewis extended its run the first 3:30 of the second half outscoring the Miners 10-2 to extend their lead to 49-30 on a jumper from D'Avanzo. S&T cut into the lead with an 8-2 run highlighted by pair of three's from Brooks Gerrity make it a 13 point game but the Flyers responded with a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to put the game away. McCullum accounted for half of the points in the run.
Lewis led by as many as 27 in the contest on a pair of free throws from
Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville) with 6:23 to play in the game.
The Miners got as close as 15 points late in the game on a pair of free throws from Yahmir Muhammed.
The Flyers ended the game shooting 48 percent (29-for-60) from the field, was 4-of-16 from three and shot 79 percent at the foul line. McCullum was joined in double figures by
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) with 11 while D'Avanzo added 10. McCullum also distributed seven assists in the contest.
S&T was held to 38 percent (22-of-58) shooting in the contest and was held to 3-for-21 (14 percent) from the three-point line and shot 55 percent at the charity stripe. Muhammed led the Miners with 12 points off the bench while Mitch Fairless added 10.
Lewis concludes its brief two-game roadtrip on Saturday taking on Drury at 3 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Events Center. The Panthers lost to Indianapolis 71-70 on Thursday night on a pair of free throws with 4.4 left.
