Bristol, Tenn. – The ninth ranked Lewis men's volleyball team led virtually wire-to-wire in its sweep of Mount Olive on Saturday evening in Bristol, Tenn.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) led the Flyer (3-1) attack with 11 kills apiece while
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 25 assists and four service aces.
Yoshimoto served the first six points of the match including a pair of service aces before the Trojans (0-3) got on the board after a kill by Tobi Azeez. Lewis responded with a 7-2 run to stretch its lead to double digits and didn't allow Mount Olive to get closer than six the rest of the set. The Flyers closed out the set with a 9-2 run to win the opener 25-12 on an ace from
Connor Pallmann (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North).
Lewis held the Trojans to a negative hitting percentage in the frame while hitting .238 themselves.
The Flyers scored the first three points and six of the first eight to begin the middle set. Mount Olive got to within 10-8 but no closer as Lewis put the set away with a 12-3 run behind three kills from
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) and two kills from Coenen and one apiece from Pallman and Mitchem.
The Flyers hit .478 in the middle stanza with 15 kills against four errors in 23 chances in the set.
The Trojans scored the first point of set three on a kill from Azeez but Lewis responded with an 8-3 run to take control of the set. The Flyer lead grew to 19-10 when Coenen and
Robert Oliver Jr. (Waimea, Hawaii/Waimea) stuffed Luke Visgitis at the net.
Mount Olive cut the lead to four on three different occasions late in the set before Lewis closed it out with a kill from Moses.
The Flyers finished the match with a hitting percentage of .362 recording 38 kills against 13 errors in 69 chances. They also had eight service aces in the match to go along with seven total blocks.
Lewis' defense held the Trojans to a .125 attack percentage (21 kills-13 errors-64 total attacks). Azeez led Mount Olive with six kills while Visgitis and Brad Monaghan finished with four kills each.
The Flyers are back at home on Tuesday (Jan. 15) hosting Dominican at 7 p.m.
