ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's basketball team wrapped up non-conference action with a 108-61 win over Indiana Northwest on Wednesday night at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (11-3) led wire-to-wire and all 12 players scored in the contest.
Lewis recorded season-highs in points (108), field goals made (45), matched its season-high of 11 three-pointers made, rebounds (48), assists (25) and field goal percentage (.600).
The Flyers got off to a quick start hitting back-to-back three's from
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) and
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) to take a 6-0 lead less than a minute into the game. The RedHawks (15-6) cut the deficit to 6-4 on a three-pointer from Chris Dixon-Williams and a free throw by LaShawn Lewis more than a minute later.
That would be the closest they got though as Lewis used a 17-3 run over the next six minutes to extend its lead to double digits on a layup by
Dusan Mahorcic (Montenegro, Serbia/Notre Dame College Prep) with 11:48 left in the half.
IU Northwest cut the deficit to 10 a couple of times but the Flyers pulled away leading by as many as 20 in the opening half.
Lewis shot 63 percent from the floor, was 4-of-7 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line in the first 20 minutes. McCullum led all scorers with 14 points while Oliver added eight and
Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) chipped in with seven.
The Flyers opened the second half on an 11-0 to stretch its lead to 29 on a dunk by
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) less than three minutes into the half. The lead grew to as many as 47 points on a jumper from
Marco Pettinato (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) with 1:10 left in the game.
Lewis had five players reach double figures in scoring led by McCullum with 18. Blaylock added 16, all in the second half, while Oliver added 11, Reinhart finished with 12 and
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) added 11.
The Flyers outscored the RedHawks 63-to-18 in the paint, 30-to-17 in points off turnovers, 16-to-8 in second chance points, 23-to-14 in fast break points and 51-to-31 in bench points.
Jagger Surface finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-10 from downtown, and Armon Williams added 13 points to lead IU Northwest.
Lewis resumes GLVC play on Saturday as it travels to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds at 2 p.m. (CST).
