ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The ninth ranked Lewis men's volleyball team snapped its two-game skid rallying for a five-set win at Cal State Northridge on Saturday night. The Flyers improved to 6-3 while the Matadors fall to 5-4.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) led Lewis with a season-high 15 kills while
Connor Pallmann (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) added 11 kills.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) finished with a double-double registering 42 assists and 12 digs. The Flyers outhit CSUN .274-to-.205 in the contest.
Lewis recorded 16.5 total blocks including nine solo in the match.
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) had seven total blocks while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and Moses had five total blocks each.
The Matadors had 62 kills to 54 for the Flyers but committed 31 attack errors compared to 20 for Lewis. Ksawery Tomsia had a match-high 24 kills, Dimitar Kalchev added 19 kills and Maciej Ptaszynski had 11 kills. Taylor Ittner handed out 50 assists and Emmett Enriques had 11 digs.
Lewis trailed by as many as seven in the opening set but cut the CSUN lead to 17-15 on back-to-back aces from Yoshimoto. The Matadors pushed the lead back to five but the Flyers got back to within 24-22 on a block by Yoshimoto. CSUN took the opener 25-22 on a kill from Kalchev.
The second set featured 13 ties and five lead changes as Lewis overcame an early four point deficit to win 25-23 and even the match at a set apiece. The Flyers hit .400 in the frame (12 kills-2 errors-25 total attacks).
The middle set was tied at 15 when Lewis seized control going on a 10-4 run the rest of the way to win 25-19. Moses and Pallman combined for nine of the Flyers' 12 kills in the set.
The Matadors led by as many as seven in the fourth set but Lewis was able to cut the deficit to three at 24-21 after a kill by
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS). That would be the closest it got though as Kalchev knocked down a kill to give CSUN the 25-21 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Matadors led 8-5 at the changeover in the fifth set. The Flyers scored five of the next seven points to even the set at 10 on a kill by Moses. Kalchev halted the run momentarily with a kill to make it 11-10.
Moses evened things back up with a kill and then gave Lewis the lead for good with an ace.
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) recorded back-to-back kills to give the Flyers three match points. CSUN staved off the first match point when Tomsia and Rzepniewski blocked Coenen before Pallmann ended the match with a kill.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 31) hosting Penn State at 7 p.m. Thursday's theme is Beach Night at Neil Carey Arena.
