ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The fifth ranked Lewis women's basketball team used a dominant second half to defeat Truman State 86-56 on Thursday night at Neil Carey Arena. The win was the 10th straight for the Flyers (10-1, 2-0 GLVC) and snapped the Bulldogs five game winning streak.
Truman scored the first five points of the contest and led by as many as six in the opening 10 minutes. Lewis responded with a 13-4 run over a four minute span to take a three-point lead on a layup from
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) with less than two minutes to play in the quarter.
Brooke Bailey kept the Bulldogs in the contest scoring 12 of the team's 17 points and hit a three to tie the game but
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) gave the Flyers the lead at the quarter break with a layup.
Rachel Edmundson hit a three less than a minute into the second quarter to give the Bulldogs their final lead of the game. Lewis answered with a 7-2 run over the next 2:20 to retake the lead.
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) scored five straight points at one point hitting a layup and a three.
The Flyers extended their lead to six with 1:05 remaining in the half and had a chance at a bigger lead but turned the ball over twice in the final minute. Bailey made them pay hitting a three-pointer right before the buzzer to cut the lead to 35-32 at the break.
Lewis shot 67 percent from the field in the third quarter outscoring Truman 27-8 to extend its lead 62-40 by the end of the quarter. Lockett capped the quarter off hitting a layup right before the end of the stanza. Kelliher scored 12 of her game-high 27 points in the frame while Lockett added seven and
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) chipped in with five.
The Flyers continued their hot shooting in the final quarter making 60 percent of their shots to build its largest lead of the game on a layup by
Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) with 0:13 left.
Lewis finished the contest shooting 57 percent (33-for-58) from the floor, was 3-of-7 from downtown and shot 65 percent at the foul line. It outscored the Bulldogs 56-to-26 in the paint. Kelliher added 10 rebounds to go along with her 27 points for her fourth double-double of the season. Lockett and
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) finished with 13 points apiece.
Truman State was led in scoring by Bailey with 15 points but was shut out in the second half. Edmundson added 12 points with only four in the second half. The Bulldogs were held to a season low 56 points. They shot 34 percent (22-for-64) from the floor, were 7-of-23 from three and shot 63 percent at the foul line.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday hosting Quincy at 1 p.m. The Hawks rallied from an eight-point deficit to pick up 67-59 win in overtime at Indianapolis on Thursday.
