Fourth Ranked Lewis Women’s Basketball Defeats Central State 101-91

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The fourth ranked Lewis women's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 101-91 win against Central State at Neil Carey Arena on Tuesday night. Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led three Flyers (12-1) in double figures matching her career-high with 38 points.

Lewis recorded season highs in points (101), field goals made (38), field goal percentage (59.4), three-point field goal percentage (64.7), assists (29) and blocked shots (7). However, the Flyers gave up a season-high 43 rebounds, 21 of those on the offensive end, resulting in 22 second chance points for Central State.

It was a back-and-forth affair all night as CSU led by as many as seven points 4:10 into the contest but Lewis responded with a 15-5 run over the next 3:34 to to take the lead at 22-17. Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit a pair of big three's in that run including the one that gave the Flyers the lead for good with 3:01 left in the frame.

The Marauders (5-10) answered back scoring the final four points of the stanza to cut the lead to 22-21 heading into the second quarter.

Lewis opened the second quarter on a 9-1 run over the first 2:25 of the frame but CSU refused to go away cutting the lead to five near the midway point of the quarter on a jumper from Sandra Guilford.

The Flyers got a layup from Kelliher and back-to-back three's from Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) to extend their lead to their biggest of the half at 39-26. The Marauders once again had an answer closing the quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the Lewis lead to 43-36 at the intermission.

Central State continued to hang around early in the third quarter trailing by only seven less than four minutes into the quarter. The Flyers countered with a 16-2 run behind seven points from Kelliher while Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South), Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added three points each.

The Marauders though were able to cut the Lewis lead to 13 by the end of the frame behind seven points from Bri'elle Johnson.

In the final 10 minutes the two sides traded baskets with Central State getting as close as 84-77 on a jumper in transition from Takyra Gilbert nearly halfway through the stanza. Lewis responded with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to extend its lead to 18 points on a layup from Kelliher.

The Marauders continued to fight finishing the game on a 12-4 run to get it to the 10-point margin.

Joining Kelliher in double figures was Hinders with 13 while Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added 10 off the bench. Kelliher also finished with 10 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Black and Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) had eight assists each in the contest. The eight assists matched a career-high for Green and was a career-high for Black.

All five starters reached double figures for Central State led by Johnson with 19 points while Gilbert and Falon Edwards added 16 points each. Evans had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her 14 points to record the double-double. Gilbert handed out seven assists.

The Flyers resume GLVC play on Thursday as they begin a three-game roadtrip starting with a trip to Rolla, Mo., to take on Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m.
