Story Links

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's soccer team tried to rally from a 2-0 deficit but came up a goal short in a 2-1 loss on windy Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers fall to 7-3-2, 4-3-2 GLVC while the Knights improve to 8-0-3, 5-0-3 GLVC.

Bellarmine controlled play for a majority of the opening half and outshot Lewis 4-0. It appeared the game was going to go to the half scoreless but the Knights scored with 2:12 left in the frame to take the lead.

Gilio Aviles sent a cross into the box from the right side of the field. It take a bounce in front of C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) who couldn't handle it and it crossed over the goal line for Aviles second goal of the season.

Bellarmine added to its lead six minutes into the second half. Donald Aviles headed a goal kick from Couper ahead to Tomas Bernedo who got a piece of it to redirect it too Micah Linscott. Linscott split the defense and put it past Couper into the open goal.

The Flyers got one of those goals back in the 66th minute as they were awarded a free kick outside the Knights box. Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) sent a free kick into the far side of the box. The ball was knocked around and fell to Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College). Ganiyu-Iddrisu took a shot which was saved but not controlled. Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) was there on the doorstep to knock in the rebound.

Linscott nearly gave Bellarmine its two goal lead back six minutes later but his attempt was saved off the line by a Lewis defender. Gilio Aviles also had an attempt but his shot was blocked.

Baumann had a chance at the equalizer in the 78th minute but his shot went wide. Timm Adler (Frankenthal Rheinland-Pfalz Germany/Karolinen-Gymnasium Frankenthal) had a chance from distance in the final minute of play but his shot missed wide.

The Flyers were outshot in the contest 9-4 and 6-1 in shots on goal. The Knights also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Lewis is back in action this Friday (Oct. 18) traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 7:30 p.m.
