LEBANON, Ill. – Lewis' men's soccer team dropped its third straight contest in a 1-0 decision at McKendree on Friday evening. The Flyers drop to 7-4-2, 4-4-2 GLVC while the Bearcats improve to 9-1-2, 8-0-2 GLVC.
Lewis had the game's first good scoring chance in the 15th minute but
Aris Oluwatuyi's (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) shot was saved by Pachu Cortazar.
McKendree recorded its first shot on goal 7:41 later but
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) denied Hampus Filipsson.
The Bearcats broke the scoreless tie on a goal in the 26th minute as James Stone was able to beat Couper with an assist from Filipsson.
The Flyers had opportunities with three corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of the frame but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
McKendree outshot Lewis 5-2 in the first half and 2-1 in shots on goal but the Flyers held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Lewis came out looking for the equalizer early in the second half and nearly had it three-plus minutes in but Cortazar made a save on
Oliwer Mattiasson (Vanerborg, Sweden) which resulted in a corner kick.
Claude Kameni (Berlin, Germany/OSZ Gesundheit) had a chance off the ensuing corner but was denied by Cortazar.
The Flyers had another chance in the 51st minute but
Domenic Baumann's (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) shot hit the crossbar.
Oluwatuyi had chances in the 61st and 66th minutes but those missed wide. He had another chance in the 72nd minute but that shot hit off the post.
Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrissu had Lewis' final chance in the 76th which was saved by Cortazar.
The Flyers finished the contest outshooting the Bearcats 9-8, 4-3 in shots on goal and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lewis continues its four game road trip on Sunday traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m.
