INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lewis' 10th ranked women's volleyball team snapped a two-match skid with a 3-0 win over Findlay in its first match at the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday at The Volleyball Academy in Indianapolis. The Flyers improve to 17-3 while the Oilers drop to 5-13.
Lewis never trailed in the opening frame as it scored the first six points of the contest. Findlay cut the deficit to 10-6 on a kill from Madison Moore but the Flyers ran off seven of the next 10 points to build a 17-9 after a ball handling error on the Oiler setter. Lewis led by as many as 13 in the stanza.
The Flyers hit .536 in the set recording 16 kills against one error in 28 chances.
Farah Taki (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led the way with six kills while
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) had three kills each.
Lewis used a 13-3 run in the middle stanza to break a tie at six. The lead grew to as many as 10 after a kill from
Josie Kleekamp (Washington, Mo./Washington). Findlay made a late run to cut the margin to seven but that was the closest it got as
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) ended the set with a kill.
The third set featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Flyers overcame a 17-14 deficit thanks to an 8-1 run. Schlechte had two aces and a kill in the run while
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had a kill as well. Findlay cut the deficit to 22-20 but Lewis closed out the match scoring the final three points to complete the sweep.
The Flyers finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .316 (41 kills/11 errors/95 total attacks). Schlechte led a balanced attack with eight kills while Preuss and Taki added six kills apiece.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) finished with 22 assists and Preuss had a team-high 13 digs.
Lewis returns to action at the Crossover on Saturday with two more contests. It'll play Grand Valley at 9 a.m. (CDT) and then will face 16th ranked Hillsdale at 3 p.m. (CDT).
