10th Ranked Flyers Wrap Up Midwest Region Crossover With Perfect Mark

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lewis' 10th ranked women's volleyball team wrapped the up the Midwest Region Crossover with a pair of wins on Saturday at The Volleyball Academy in Indianapolis. The Flyers (19-3) rallied for a four set win over Grand Valley State in the opener on Saturday and then prevailed in five sets over 16th ranked Hillsdale in the afternoon session.

The Lakers (9-11) hit .424 in the opening set while the Flyers were held to .176 hitting percentage. Lewis led 14-12 when Grand Valley went on a 6-1 run to take a three point advantage. The Flyers came right back with three points in a row to even the set. Lewis regained the lead at 21-20 on a kill from Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) but the Lakers scored five of the final six points to take the opener 25-22.

The Flyers dominated set two racing out to an early five point lead and never looked back. The lead grew to as many as 14 as the Flyers evened the match with a 25-13 victory. Lewis' defense held GVSU to a -.225 hitting percentage and forced the Lakers into 13 errors. The Flyer defense had five total blocks in the stanza.

Lewis used an 8-2 run midway through the swing set to overcome a 14-12 deficit to take a 20-16 lead when Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) and Farah Taki (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) teamed up to block Ali Thompson. Grand Valley scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to 22-20 but the Flyers closed out the set by scoring the last three points to win 25-20.

Lewis scored five of the first seven points to begin the fourth set and never looked back. The Lakers closed to within 15-13 but the Flyers responded closing the match on a 10-4 run to win 25-17. Lewis hit .270 in the final frame while holding Grand Valley to a .023 attack percentage and recorded five total blocks.

The Flyers finished the match with a hitting percentage of .193 (44 kills-17 errors-140 total attempts). Lewis finished the match with 12 total blocks. Preuss led the Flyers with 15 kills while Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added 10. Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 23 digs and Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with 19 digs. Taki had seven total blocks while Van Loo had six total blocks.

Lewis 3 Hillsdale 2 (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 15-10)
Lewis scored nine of the first 10 points to begin the match against the Chargers (16-3) and led by as many as 11 in the opening stanza. Hillsdale made a late run getting to within five but the Flyers closed it out with a kill from Preuss.

The second set was tied at 13 when Lewis began to take control with a 9-3 run to grab a six-point lead on a kill by Van Loo. The Chargers responded with a 6-2 run to cut the Flyer lead to 24-22 before Preuss ended the set with her sixth kill of the match.

Lewis led 14-7 in the third set and appeared to be in control but Hillsdale refused to go quietly as it countered with a 13-4 run to grab a 20-18 lead. The Flyers answered with back-to-back points to even things at 20 but the Chargers scored the final five points of the set to win 25-20 to extend the match.

The fourth set was all Hillsdale as it scored the first four points of the set and led by as many as nine in the frame. Lewis cut the lead to five but was unable to get any closer as the Chargers won 25-18 to force the winner take-all fifth set.

The Flyers trailed 6-3 in the final set before going on a 7-1 run to take a 10-7 lead on a kill from Preuss. Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had two kills and two blocks in that run while Preuss added two blocks and a kill. Hillsdale fought back scoring three of the next four points to cut the lead to 11-10 but Lewis was able to close out the match by scoring the final four points of the match.

Wilhelm was tied for the match-high with 19 kills while Preuss and Venema added 10 kills each. Preuss also recorded her 1,000th career kill in the contest. Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) dished out 25 assists and Poppen added 20 digs. The Flyer front line combined for 13 blocks with Venema matching her career of nine total blocks.

Lewis hit .142 (55k-31e-169ta) while holding the Chargers to a .134 hitting percentage.

The Flyers are back at home on Friday (Oct. 25) to take on Missouri-St. Louis at 7 p.m.
