ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The ninth ranked Lewis women's volleyball defeated 25th ranked Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 in a Top 25 matchup on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 20-3 and 6-2 in the GLVC while the Tritons fall to 20-3, 5-3 GLVC.
Lewis controlled the opening set as it hit .412 for the stanza and led by as many as 11 points before settling for the 25-15 win.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led the Flyers with four kills in the frame while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic),
Farah Taki (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had three kills each.
UMSL turned the tables in set two scoring the first three points of the set and led by as many as six points. Lewis made a run to cut the deficit to 16-14 but the Tritons countered scoring five of the next six points to regain their six point cushion. The Flyers wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the frame as UMSL won 25-19 to even the match.
Lewis used a 15-2 run in the third set to extend its lead from 9-7 to 24-9. Wilhelm, Venema and
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) had two kills each in the run and Venema and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) recorded back-to-back blocks in the run as well. Raquel Kessler stopped the run briefly before a kill from Van Loo gave the Flyers the 25-10 set win.
Lewis led by as many as five points in the fourth set but the Tritons made a late run to get within 24-21 to force a Flyer timeout. After the timeout, Lewis closed out the match on a kill from Wilhelm.
The Flyers finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .279 (53 kills/15 errors/136 total attacks) and held UMSL to its lowest hitting percentage of the season at .117.
Van Loo finished with a career-high 12 kills and was joined by Wilhelm with 12 kills while Preuss added 11 kills.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) dished out 24 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with 26 digs. Venema finished with six total blocks in the contest.
Lewis concludes its brief two-match homestand on Saturday hosting Lindenwood at 3 p.m.
