LEBANON, Ill. – Lewis' women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at McKendree on Friday evening. The Flyers fall to 6-5-2, 4-4-2 GLVC while the Bearcats improve to 10-2-1, 8-1-1 GLVC.
The game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes though Lewis had the better of the scoring opportunities.
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) had a chance in the 10th minute that was saved by Zoe Brochu and then
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) had a chance in the 21st minute that was saved by Brochu.
McKendree recorded its first shot on goal in the 31st minute as Madyson Mossman's shot was saved by
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England).
The Flyers had another chance in the 34th minute but
Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) missed her attempt wide.
The Bearcats finished the first half with a 6-3 advantage in shots but Lewis held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal while McKendree registered five corner kicks to one for the Flyers.
The Bearcats broke the scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute as Paula Melsheimer beat Clark with an assist from Allison Frederking.
Parnello had a chance to tie the game in the 61st minute but her shot was saved by Brochu.
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) had a chance seven minutes later which was also saved.
Lewis had to play the final 18:30 minutes down a player as Havelka-Vanderplow was sent off with a red card.
Parnello had a pair of chances in the span of 0:36 seconds but missed them wide. She had another chance in the 81st minute but missed it wide as well.
Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) had one final chance in the 86th minute but once again Brochu was there to make the save.
The Flyers outshot the Bearcats 6-4 in the final 45 minutes but McKendree finished the contest with the overall edge in shots 10-9. Lewis put five shots on goal compared to three for the Bearcats.
The Flyers travel to Evansville, Ind., on Sunday to take on Southern Indiana at 12 p.m.
