Story Links

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis' women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Southern Indiana's Strassweg Field in Evansville, Ind., on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers are 6-5-3, 4-4-3 while the Screaming Eagles are 9-3-1, 7-3-1 GLVC.

Christine Szymanski (Orland Park, Ill/Sandburg) got Lewis on the board with a goal in the 16th minute. Allie Mikos (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) brought the ball downfield and found Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) along the end line. Sengstock served a cross into the six-yard box where Szymanski was there to put it in for her second goal of the season.

The Flyers had another chance to extend their lead in the final 10 minutes of the half on a shot attempt from Julia Barenbaum (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah Community) which was saved by Maya Etienne.

Lewis held a 6-5 advantage in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal. USI had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Screaming Eagles flew out of the gate to begin the second half looking for the equalizer. They recorded four shots with two of those on goal in the first seven minutes of the frame. USI got the equalizer in the 57th. Katlyn Andres brought the ball down the left side and sent a cross into the box. Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) came off her line but Maggie Winter beat her to the ball to score the tying goal.

Sengstock had a chance to give Lewis the lead back with 16:28 to play but her shot was saved. Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) had a chance as well in the 84th minute but her shot missed wide.

The Flyers had three shots at winning the game in the first overtime period. Mikos missed a chance wide in the 94th minute. Parnello had an attempt 90 seconds later which was blocked and Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) had chance with 3:30 left in the session that was saved.

USI appeared to score the game-winner with less than six minutes to play in the second overtime but the play was called offsides.

Parnello had one more chance to win the game for Lewis but her shot was saved by Etienne with 3:11 remaining.

The Screaming Eagles held a 14-13 advantage in shots but the Flyers outshot them 5-0 in the overtime sessions. Lewis put six shots on goal to just four for USI.

Lewis continues its four-game road trip next Friday (Oct. 25) traveling to Kansas City, Mo., to take on Rockhurst at 5 p.m.
