KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lewis' men's soccer team was defeated by Rockhurst 2-1 on Friday evening at Bourke Field in Kansas City, Mo. The Flyers drop to 7-6-2, 4-6-2 GLVC while the Hawks are now 5-7-2, 5-6-1 GLVC.
Rockhurst scored twice in the span of four minutes late in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Preston Mboob put the Hawks in front with a goal from 10 yards out from the middle of the box with assists from Claudio Romano and Chase Klusman in the 35th minute.
The Hawks struck again in the 39th minute. This time it was Parker Esparza redirecting a cross in from eight yards out inside the right post. Victor Gonzalez and Federico Verlicchi were credited with assists on the play.
Lewis outshot Rockhurst 5-4 in the first 45 minutes but the Hawks put half of their shots on goal to just one for the Flyers. Lewis had both corner kicks in the frame.
The Flyers had couple of really good chances to start the second half but were unable to break through until the 64th minute when
John Oshakpemhe (Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria/Al-Mukhtar Secondary School) headed home a free kick from
Claude Kameni (Berlin, Germany/OSZ Gesundheit) for his first goal of the season. Kameni served it into the box and Oshakpemhe put it in from five yards out.
Lewis had three chances at the equalizer in the final eight minutes but was unable to convert.
Alexis Robles-Ibarra (Harvard, Ill./Harvard) missed a shot high in the 83rd minute, then
Marty Manzke (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was denied by Nick Randazzo in the 88th minute and
Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) missed a shot to the right with less than a minute to play.
The Flyers were outshot in the contest 12-11 and 6-5 in shots on goal. Each side finished with five corner kicks in the contest.
Lewis wraps up its four game roadtrip on Sunday heading to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell at 2:30 p.m.
