LIBERTY, Mo. – Lewis' men's soccer team got an early goal to defeat William Jewell 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. With the win, the Flyers improve to 8-6-2, 5-6-2 while the Cardinals drop to 1-12-2, 1-9-2 GLVC.
Lewis came out flying to start the game recording four shots with two of those being on goal in the first 10 minutes.
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) had a chance 70 seconds into the game that was blocked.
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) had an opportunity four minutes later that was saved by a Cardinal defender. Oluwatuyi had another chance in the sixth minute that missed left.
Iniguez put the Flyers on the board in the eighth minute. Lewis was awarded a free kick after a foul on Noah Studebaker.
Matt Budreck (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) took the free kick and served into the middle of the box to Oluwatuyi. Oluwatuyi passed it to a wide open Iniguez who scored from nine yards out in the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.
The Flyers kept the pressure on looking for a second goal with Oluwatuyi recording two shots in the 11th and 15th minutes.
William Jewell had a chance at the equalizer near the midway point of the half. Noah Espinosa tried to head home a cross but
John Oshakpemhe (Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria/Al-Mukhtar Secondary School) knocked down the ball before it got to goal.
Espinosa had another attempt in the 25th minute but was denied by
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic).
Iniguez had a shot at a second goal with less than 10 minutes to play in the half but was turned away by Jayden Hicks.
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) had a chance as well 0:45 later but once again Hicks made the save.
Lewis outshot the Cardinals 8-3 in the first 45 minutes and 4-2 in shots on goal. WJC had the 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Flyers had three chances to extend their lead in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Baumann had a shot blocked less than three minutes into the half,
John Fitzgerald (Overland Park, Kan./Olathe East) had an attempt saved in the 55th minute and Baumann had a shot saved in the 64th minute.
Couper faced six shots in the second half and made four saves to record his eighth shutout of the season.
Lewis finished the game outshooting the Cardinals 12-9, 7-6 in shots on goal and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Flyers return home on Friday (Nov. 1) to take on Drury at 7:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
