ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision to Drury in overtime on Friday evening at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers are now 8-7-2, 5-7-2 GLVC while the Panthers improve to 9-6-2, 7-5-2 GLVC.
Lewis struck first six minutes into the contest.
Sebastian Arguello (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) played a long pass ahead to
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) who beat his defender and knocked it past the keeper for his team leading fifth goal of the season.
Mwanga had another chance in the 18th minute but his shot was right at Yannick Lamers who made the save.
Drury scored the equalizer in the 37th minute. The Flyers tried to clear the ball out of the backfield but instead it landed on Adem Hamdaoua's foot and he hit a volley into the lower left corner for his third goal of the season.
The Panthers outshot Lewis 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes and put four of those on goal to two for the Flyers. Drury also had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Lewis dominated the second half recording eight shots and put three on goal to just one shot for the Panthers but were unable to find the back of the net.
Mwanga had a chance to put the Flyers back in front but was denied by Lamers in the 71st minute.
Konrad Malinowski (Arlington Heights, Ill./Wheeling) had a chance 10 minutes later that was turned away and then
Jayson Iniguez (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport Township) had a shot in the 82nd minute that was also saved.
Drury had the only two chances in overtime as Joshua Lewis-Evans was denied in the 91st minute by
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic). The Panthers though scored the game-winner with 0:24 left as John Clout served a ball in from near midfield where he found Jamie O'Brien on the back end for the goal.
Lewis outshot Drury 12-10 in the contest but the Panthers had seven shots on goal to five for the Flyers.
Lewis concludes its regular season on Sunday hosting Southwest Baptist at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers will honor their five seniors prior to the start of the contest.
