ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' women's soccer team snapped its three match winless streak with a 2-0 win over Truman State on Friday evening at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improved to 4-4-1, 2-3-1 GLVC while the Bulldogs fell to 2-5-1, 2-4 GLVC.
Truman outshot Lewis 4-3 in the opening half and had two good scoring chances but
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made two saves including a diving one at the near post to prevent the goal.
The Flyers had their first scoring opportunity in the 26th minute but
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow's (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) shot was saved by Beth Hopwood.
Lewis came out in the second half flying taking five shots in the first 20-plus minutes and were finally rewarded in the 67th minute when
Jamie Hansen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) headed home a cross from
Alissa Waits (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) for her first goal of the season. The Flyers won a corner kick as
Mallory Richardson (Bartlett, Ill./Westminister Christian) played it short to Waits who found Hansen in the box. Hansen got her head to it and it deflected off a Bulldog defender into the goal.
Lewis got an insurance goal in the 74th minute.
Kailey Parnello (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) served one into the box from the right wing and it went off the keeper's hands and into the goal for her fourth of the season.
Truman mounted some pressure in the final 15 minutes but the Flyer defense blocked one shot, saw another go wide and Clark made two saves to preserve the shutout.
The Flyers finished the contest with 12-8 edge in shots, but the Bulldogs had the edge in shots on goal 4-3. Lewis had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Lewis is back at home on Sunday hosting Quincy at noon at Lewis Stadium.
