ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's soccer team scored two goals in the first four minutes on its way to a 3-0 victory over Truman State on Friday evening at Lewis Stadium. The win snapped the Flyers three match winless streak and improved them to 6-1-2, 3-1-2 GLVC while the Bulldogs fell to 4-4, 3-3 GLVC.
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) put Lewis on the board 69 seconds into the game. The goal was setup off a free kick from
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North). Beaulieu sent the ball into the box where it bounced around to
Oliwer Mattiasson (Vanerborg, Sweden). Mattiasson settled it and passed it to
Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) who sent a short towards the back post where Mwanga redirected it in for his third of the season.
Mwanga wasn't done scoring 2:20 later on a breakaway as he and Mattiasson teamed up again. Mattiasson won a ball in the midfield and played it ahead to Mwanga who got behind the defense and chipped it over a sliding keeper inside the back post.
The Flyers dominated the opening half outshooting Truman 10-3 and 3-1 in shots on goal while also holding a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Oluwatuyi added an insurance goal in the 70th minute scoring on a shot from the top of the box with an assist from Mwanga. Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrissu set up the play blasting a free kick inside the six yard box that was punched out by the keeper. The ball was settled by Mwanga and he passed it back to Oluwatuyi who blasted it home for his second goal of the season.
That was all the support
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) needed as he picked up his sixth shutout of the season. He stopped the only shot he faced.
Lewis outshot the Bulldogs 20-5 in the game, 7-1 in shots on goal and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Flyers are back at home on Sunday hosting Quincy at 2:30 p.m.
